• My Journey in Visual Learning

I began making sketch animation videos as a middle school teacher. I wanted to design relevant content that would lead to increased student engagement. Many of my students were multilingual learners and I noticed that the use of visuals and simple explanations helped reduce extraneous cognitive load.

What began as a teaching strategy grew into a passion for making the learning visual for students. I created explainer videos relating to educational theories, creativity, and human motivation. Each time I craft a video, I begin with a deep dive into the subject. I read journal articles and books, interview experts in the field, and ultimately decide on a 2-6 minute long script. I then storyboard the concept and revise the script. Finally, I create the sketch animation videos.

    The Impact

It has been an honor to see how educators in so many different contexts have used these videos. Whether it is a fourth grade teacher in inner-city Chicago or an Engineering Professor in Australia, I have noticed the universal appeal of sketch animation videos. My Growth vs. Fixed Mindset video has received over 2.5 million views and is used in thousands of classrooms throughout the world.

    My Goal Moving Forward

As I move forward, I plan to create a new sketch video each month. If you have an idea for a video you would like to see, please email me at John@VisualizeLearning.com
